The government is confident of achieving its target of developing one million affordable houses by 2018, said Deputy Minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique.
Halimah said only 23.3 per cent or 268,018 units needed to be built to complete the target because 76.7 per cent or 883,412 units had already been completed as of September 30, according to Bernama.
Of the 883,412 units completed, 500,000 units were built by Syarikat Perumahan Negara Bhd (SPNB), 150,000 units by state governments, and the rest by the ministry and private developers based on the target group.
“The government’s commitment to build one million affordable houses will be completed to cater for the various income groups,” Halimah said during the opening of the Rumah Contoh Rumah Mesra Rakyat 1Malaysia (RMR1M) programme by SPNB at Felda Air Tawar 3, Kota Tinggi recently.
She said state governments must ensure that more houses priced below RM300,000 are built to enable those earning below RM2,500 a month to own houses.
